Los Altos Entertaining Delight - Whole House Remodel
Vintage is the best way to describe this home with all the original cabinetry intact! It was also completely compartmentalized and did not meet the needs of a family that wanted an open concept home. The clients wanted their home to increase from a 3 bed/2 bath to a 4 bed/3 bath, and this was achieved by adding on to the kitchen area, as well as adding a new master suite with a walk in closet and a spacious master bathroom to the back of the home. The first thing to get demolished was the huge brick fireplace in the middle of the living room, dining room, and kitchen areas. Removing this and opening up the space allowed the open concept to take shape. I worked to ensure that the space was completely open - no columns or supports allowed to break up the space! I also designed recessed ceilings to help define the spaces and break up the ceiling expanse. Adding on to this space allowed for a nice sized kitchen with an island, as well as an adjacent beverage center with a wine fridge. I moved the fireplace to the wall on the opposite side of the room, allowing for a hallway to be created to the new master suite and to allow circulation to the other existing bedrooms as well. I custom designed the fireplace with floating shelves and a beautiful dimensional stone installed on the lower portion, with the TV set into a niche over the fireplace unit. The components are hidden in the lower cabinetry. The laundry was expanded in the same footprint by adding an exterior door and moving the washer/dryer away from the exterior wall. Cabinetry was added to provide a mud room spot for shoes and backpacks as the family enters from the garage. Their pet dog was given its own door that is activated by a special chip on its collar that only opens the door when the dog is close by. I also designed a hanging rod installed over the sink for delicates that don't go in the dryer. The style of the home is updated with warm gray tones including the flooring, wall paint, cabinetry, and tile choices. I delivered a project that the client asked for; clean lines with quiet elegance and informal simplicity. The clients are thrilled with the new layout and the open concept that they wanted so much. The home is now more functional for hosting groups, and is aesthetically pleasing as well! The gray tones and clean lines throughout the home are gorgeous, and all the materials work together to create a cohesive space within each distinctive and quietly elegant room.
